FLOOR
PREPARATION
Good floor preparation is the foundation for the success of all
overlay applications; the installer should be familiar and experienced
not only on the installation of DecoTop but also on how to prepare
floors for overlays. Concrete should be cured for at least 14
days in warm weather climates and 28 days in cold weather. The
surface must be sound, solid, stable and free of oils, grease,
dirt, mildew, paint, curing agents or anything that may prevent
DECOTOP from adhering to the floor.
EXTERIOR:
Concrete may be prepared by chemical or mechanical means. If acid
etching, prepare a solution of 1 part muratic acid to 6 parts
water, apply with a water sprinkle can and move around with a
push broom in a circular motion to evenly spread acid over concrete.
The etching action occurs only at the first point of contact with
concrete where there is fizzing, moving inactive material around
will not properly etch the floor. Rinse immediately and thoroughly,
do not allow acid solution to dry on the surface. Sand blasting
and bead blasting are also very efficient ways to prepare exterior
concrete for overlay, this process effectively removes the top
layer of the surface, leaving a clean surface to bond to.
Exterior surfaces should also be degreased with DecoClean concrete
cleaner. Apply DecoClean to the surface and let soak in for a
few minutes then scrub with a floor scrubber with a black pad
or a hard bristle broom, then rinse. Pressure wash concrete after
etching and degreasing. Check for any discoloration or water beading,
which will indicate there is still oil or grease on the surface,
repeat the process or grind the surface until the contaminants
are totally removed.
INTERIOR:
Floors should be cleaned with a shot blaster or other mechanical
method, (floor sander with abrasive pads, or sand, or both) and
scrubbed with a floor buffer, black pad and DecoClean. After scrubbing,
remove all residues with a wet vac and allow drying. Use these
steps on all DECOTOP applications.
PRIMING: All surfaces must be primed with DT-Primer
prior to the application of any DecoTop system. After the surface
has been properly prepared and allowed to dry apply DT-Primer
as supplied, use a roller, broom or squeegee and evenly apply
over entire surface, avoid puddling and allow to dry.
DECOTOP
STAMPED OVERLAY
PRIMING
SURFACE:
Prepare the floor as instructed. DT-Primer must be used prior
to laying the stamp mix; a bond coat is not necessary when using
DT-Primer. If a bond coat is desired use DECOTOP-R for the bond
coat. Follow instructions for primer, allow to dry then apply
DecoTop-S
STAMP
MIX: Mix DECOTOP-S as instructed on the specific system
you are using. We recommend using DECOTOP-S for your stamp mix.
Mix one bag with 5 to 6.5 quarts of water, start with 5 quarts
and add more water until desired consistency is achieved. DECOTOP-S
has been specially designed for this application, with graded
hard aggregates and fibers to enhance hardness and wear resistance,
plus special additives to aid with flow and set time. One bag
of DECOTOP-S yields approximately 20 to 25 feet at 3/8" thickness.
APPLICATION
After DT-Primer has dried follow with DecoTop-S stamp mix. Mix
one to two bags of DecoTop-S in a barrel or several bags in a
mortar mixer (for increased production you can mix 6, 9, or 12
bags at a time). Spread Stamp Mix using a gauge rake set at a
minimum of a 1/4" up to 3/8" thickness. If a thicker
application will be necessary for leveling or filling in deeper
areas, we recommend that all the patching and leveling be done
first to avoid different drying rates when stamping the material.
Do a test before you start to determine the best thickness for
the stamp to be used. Immediately after gauge raking, smooth with
round edge Fresno or smoother to close in the gauge rake marks,
this is all that is needed until it’s ready for stamping,
allow to stand until desired setting is achieved. Test readiness
by stamping a small area, wet one stamp and area to be tested
with Decosup Liquid Release, if the stamp is easily removed and
imprints properly the surface is ready for stamping. Depending
on the floor and ambient temperatures it may take from one to
several hours until the mix is ready to be stamped. Pour Decosup
Liquid Release agent into a pump sprayer. Adjust spraying pattern
and wet stamps one time at the beginning of the process than apply
over DecoTop being careful not to get too far ahead because liquid
release will evaporate, and proceed with stamping. Wait for at
least four hours or until the next day to clean double lines or
imperfections, then antique and seal.
ANTIQUING
Mix ½ gallon of Decosup HardBright Clear sealer with ½
gallon of Decosup Solvent or Xylene and some release powder of
the color of your choice, start with 2 oz per gallon of antiquing
and add more as necessary, make sure the powder is well dissolved
and measured to ensure even color mix from gallon to gallon. This
solution yields 200 to 300 square feet per gallon. Put solution
into pump sprayer and spray generously and evenly over entire
area making sure you apply enough and into the grout lines. This
antiquing solution will settle in the deeper areas, thus creating
a very natural antiquing look. The advantage of this method is
that you have full control on the results and the depth of the
antiquing. If too much antiquing is applied you may remove it
with a rag then re-spray.
ACID STAINING DECOTOP
CHEMTONE
Acid Stain is ideal for antiquing DecoTop. It adds depth of color
and allows for unique designs while considerably enhancing your
project. Experimentation is encouraged, as the final color will
depend on the base used (white or gray), colorant used and other
factors. For better results light color mixes should be used.
After ChemTone is applied and the surface is rinsed and neutralized
it should be protected until it’s sealed. Read the full
ChemTone technical data sheet before use.
DECOTOP
SPRAY DECK
SPRAY
DECK is a thin, abrasion resistant, hard, easy to apply
decorative surface. It is used to decorate pool patios, sidewalks,
driveways and on commercial applications. SPRAY DECK is applied
by spraying DECOTOP-R onto the surface with a hopper gun and then
left alone or knocked down with a trowel for added texture. Designs
may be created by using tape or stencils.
PREPARATION:
Follow preparation instructions for all DECOTOP systems. Prime
surface with DT-Primer after surface is clean and dry.
BASE
COAT:
After surface is clean and prepared mask and protect all areas
not to be resurfaced. Mix one bag of DECOTOP R with 1.5 gallons
of water, apply first coat with a squeegee or trowel at a thickness
of 1/16” over entire surface and allow to dry.
KNOCK
DOWN OR SPLATTER TEXTURE:
Once first coat has dried you can create designs using Decosup’s
Spray Deck Tape, some of the most popular designs are tile, brick
and keystone. Decosup’s Spray Deck Tape is a reinforced
paper back tape that will be easily removed after DecoTop dries,
masking tape, painters tape or other non-reinforced tapes are
not recommended and their removal will be extremely hard. Stencils
are also use to create designs, stencils come in many different
patterns and you may also use stencils. After tape or stencil
is secured, mix DECOTOP-R the same as first coat and apply with
a hopper gun at about 15 to 25 PSI, depending on the texture wanted.
Let stand for a few seconds and if a Knock Down look is desired,
strike the top surface with a pool trowel to create the texture.
If a splatter look is desired just leave alone after spray. Do
not allow to stand too long before knocking down you will not
get the desired texture and do not do it too soon to avoid big
smooth areas. Let dry for 24 hours and seal with two coats of
HardBright clear sealer, HardBright Pigmented Sealer may also
be used if a more uniform color is desired.
BROOM
FINISH: Prime surface with DT-Primer then apply bond
coat with a squeegee or broom, allow setting for a few minutes.
Mix more DECOTOP-R and apply with a broom, if a coarser finish
is desired, use DECOTOP-S for the finish coat. Yields about 200
to 300 square feet.
SEALING:
DECOTOP OVERLAY may be sealed with the following sealers, please
follow individual product directions.
HARDBRIGHT
CLEAR: Solvent borne acrylic sealer, 30 % solids. Recommended
for exterior and interior application. Read safety precautions
for interior application. It provides medium hardness and good
